The Thomaston City Council met Tuesday evening, Jim Davis of the Tax Assessors office presented the council with an overview of changes in the laws affecting the tax digest.
Changes of note included:
- All property owners now receive appraisal notices, not just those with an increase.
- Uniform appeal period of 45 days to file.
- Bank foreclosures & bank sales no longer considered fair market value sales
- Errors may only be corrected in favor of tax payers for prior three years
Davis advised the council that the valuation freeze that had been in effect for the past 3 years will not apply to the 2012 digest, but due to the economic downturn’s impact on values, the digest is likely to be lower next year.
City Clerk Dennis Truitt announced the qualifying dates and fees for the general election, they are as follows for council seats 1, 2, 3 and the mayor’s seat:
- Qualifying - Monday, August 29, 2010 through Friday September 2, 2010 from 8:30 am to 12 noon and from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
- Fees – Council = $72.00; Mayor = $108.00
Mayor Hays Arnold congratulated Sarah Armstrong on the opening of her new dance facility located at 203 East Main Street.
